Pray, Learn, Organize, Act
The Genesis Covenant is a grassroots movement open to men and women of all faiths. The concept we are advocating for is simple: We each work within our own faith community, but we communicate and cooperate with one another to reach the goal of nation-wide greenhouse gas reduction. We seek to persuade the top leadership of every religious community in the United States to endorse The Genesis Covenant as a pledge to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a minimum of 50% in ten years. We accomplish this goal by organizing our friends in our own faith community.
If you are willing to put your talent to use in this united effort, here are five possible ways to become involved. Please note that we will not share your personal contact information with any outside organization.
1. Become a Genesis Covenant Community Member.
The Genesis Covenant is not an organization with an agenda. We are an agenda with a community. Persons of all faith traditions are welcome to add their names to the list of our Community Members. By adding your name as a Genesis Covenant Community Member, you are expressing your support of the Genesis Covenant and your intention to support its goals. If you would like, we will also keep you posted by email of new developments and opportunities in our growing grassroots community.
2. Create or join a spiritual network in your faith community to support the Genesis Covenant.
The men and women who are part of The Genesis Covenant community are people of faith. We believe that our prayers with and for one another in this project are vital to our success. We hope that all religious traditions will find their unique spiritual voice in our community. If your gift is in worship, prayer, meditation, the arts, or preaching, then we invite you to join us in sharing that gift through our Many Traditions network and discover others who are supporting The Genesis Covenant through prayer and public performance.
3. Create or join an education network in your faith community.
All of us are still learning about climate change. Information about it is growing rapidly and even the “experts” are constantly learning new facts. The Genesis Covenant community is a community of learners. We believe that the more people learn about the dangers (and hopes) for our environment, the more they will join us in protecting it. If your gift is in education, teaching, writing, or translating, then we invite you to join us through our Engaged Education network and discover others who are helping use The Genesis Covenant as a teaching opportunity for their community and themselves.
4. Create or join an advocacy network in your faith community.
Our community has a goal: to persuade every national religious body in the United States to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by a minimum of 50% in ten years. To achieve that goal, the national representatives of those faith communities will need to ratify The Genesis Covenant’s call for this reduction through their own process of decision-making. If your gift is in advocacy, organization, communications, or networking, then we invite you to share that gift through our Community Organizers network and to discover connect with others who are forming support groups in their communities want to work for ratification of the Genesis Covenant within your faith community.
5. Create or join a communications network in your faith community.
We are a community of religious people who understand how deeply religious differences can divide us. As volunteers working together we are sensitive to those differences and respectful of each person’s convictions. We do not debate or proselytize one another. We do not seek to convert but to cooperate. We offer a hopeful vision to a troubled world: proof that people of faith can work together even when they disagree. If you have a heart for building community, and skills in communications or media, then we invite you to explore our Communicators network and to discover how you can help share our story with others.
